Clear Aligners for Crowded or Gapped Teeth in Roseville

Crowded teeth (overlapping, twisted, hard to clean) and gapped teeth (spaces between teeth) are the two most common reasons adults seek clear aligners. Both are very treatable — within limits. Here is how to know whether your case is a straightforward aligner case or something that needs a different plan.

How Aligners Fix Crowding

Crowding means there is not enough room for your teeth in their current positions. Aligners resolve it through a combination of three movements: gently expanding the arch, slenderizing between teeth (interproximal reduction — removing fractions of a millimeter of enamel where safe), and tipping or rotating individual teeth into line. A 3D scan maps every movement before you start, so you see the projected result before committing.

Mild to moderate crowding — the kind where teeth overlap slightly or one or two teeth sit out of line — is the sweet spot for aligners. Treatment often runs 6 to 12 months.

How Aligners Close Gaps

Spacing (diastema) is often even more predictable than crowding. Aligners move teeth together along planned paths, closing small to moderate gaps reliably. One caveat: gaps sometimes exist because teeth are small relative to the jaw, or because of a tongue habit pushing teeth apart. A good evaluation looks for the cause, not just the space — closing a gap without addressing the cause invites it to reopen.

When Crowding Is Too Severe for Aligners

Aligners have real limits. Be cautious if your case involves:

  • Severe rotations — teeth turned more than about 20 degrees are hard for a removable tray to grip and turn.
  • Large vertical movements — pulling a tooth significantly up or down is the movement aligners do least predictably.
  • Bite dysfunction underneath — crowding with a deep bite, open bite, or jaw-joint symptoms needs the bite addressed, not just the alignment.
  • Gum disease or bone loss — moving teeth in an unhealthy foundation makes everything worse. Periodontal health comes first, always.

An honest provider tells you when aligners are the wrong tool. That conversation is worth more than any quote.

What Treatment Actually Looks Like

After a 3D scan and planning, you receive sets of trays, each worn 20 to 22 hours a day for one to two weeks. Small tooth-colored attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip. You check in every 6 to 8 weeks so progress can be tracked against the plan. Most crowded/gapped cases finish in 6 to 18 months depending on severity, followed by retainers — non-negotiable, since teeth shift throughout life.

Why the Bite Evaluation Matters More Than the Scan

A scan shows tooth positions. It does not show whether your bite functions well, whether your gums and bone can support movement, or whether existing restorations complicate the plan. Straight teeth in a failing bite is not a success. A prosthodontist evaluates the full system — teeth, gums, bone, jaw joints, and restorations — before any tray is made. For adults, that evaluation is the difference between a cosmetic fix and a lasting result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Invisalign fix severely crowded teeth?

Mild to moderate crowding, yes — reliably. Severe crowding with major rotations or vertical problems may need braces or a combined approach. Your scan and exam determine which category you are in.

How long does it take to close gaps with aligners?

Small to moderate gaps often close in 6 to 12 months. Larger spacing, or spacing caused by small teeth or tongue habits, needs a plan that addresses the cause — sometimes including restorative work after alignment.

Will I need attachments or IPR?

Possibly. Attachments help trays grip teeth for harder movements; interproximal reduction creates small amounts of space in crowded cases. Both are routine and your plan will show where they are needed.

Do gaps come back after treatment?

They can — if the cause was not addressed or retainers are not worn. Retention is what protects your result for life, regardless of how the gaps were closed.

Can aligners fix crowding if I have gum recession?

Only after a periodontal evaluation. Moving teeth with active gum disease or significant bone loss is unsafe. Healthy gums and adequate bone come first; alignment second.
